We set out to throw a summer party. What we got was a full-on celebration of Southside neighbors and community! More than 400 neighbors turned out for our 2026 Summer Kick Off at McKinley Park on July 1 as part of United Way of Central New York’s annual Day of Caring events.

Between the music, the face painting, bounce houses and inflatables, resource and information tables, and giveaways there was something for every neighbor who came through.

Giveaways at the event ran the gamut, from youth swimsuits and outdoor recreation items to beach towels and sunscreen. The humidifiers, though, had a story of their own: partway through the afternoon, a Southside neighbor named Zay pulled up with a flatbed truck loaded with more than 50 brand-new units, ready to give them all away. No fanfare, no ask, just a neighbor who saw an opportunity to help other neighbors. Awesome!

Alongside the food, games, and giveaways, the day also connected families to resources that matter, and welcomed city and state leadership. City of Syracuse Parks Commissioner Syeisha Byrd came out in person, the Office of New York State Assemblywoman Pamela Hunter was on hand, and Syracuse Common Councilor-at-Large Chol Majok stopped by to take part.

To everyone who tabled, volunteered, donated, sponsored, or simply showed up and stayed awhile: THANK YOU! Our goal was to bring people together in a summer celebration of neighbors and community, and that is exactly what happened!
